Meeting young writers

During Book Week Scotland I visited Grange Primary School in Bo’ness to read Ruan the Little Red Squirrel to Primary 2 and to talk about all things Scotland and squirrels!

Recently I went back to Grange PS to take part in a work fair, to help inspire children to follow their goals and to give them a taste of what the world of work is really like. I attended as an ‘author’ which was very surreal indeed.

As part of the session, the kids worked in groups to reinvent Ruan’s story in their own words and to take him on travels from their imagination… to destinations including but not limited to:

Perth
Kinross
Ibrox Stadium
The Zoo
London
Barcelona
Miami
Spain
Portugal
Tenerife
Argentina
My House
Tesco
Space

The kids and I had a great time coming up with new adventures for Ruan and amongst the many budding writers there were plenty of future illustrators in the groups too to bring the stories to life!

After the event I received this lovely card from the class, illustrated by one of the children.

Grange Primary thank you card

A great day all round and a fantastic opportunity for children to see where story writing could lead them!
